Liaoning: Chinese Military's Successful Aircraft Carrier Launch

This past week, Beijing announced that it had successfully launched and landed a J-15 fighter aircraft from its new aircraft carrier, the Liaoning.

The announcement, accompanied by videos, makes clear that China has put substantial resources?both financial and human?toward its goal of operating aircraft carriers.

There were several notable aspects to this premier flight:

  • The operation involved an actual take off and recovery of an aircraft. When the ship was first formally accepted into service in September 2012, there was already speculation about whether there had been ?touch and go? landings on the deck, where an aircraft will lower its landing gear, touch down briefly on the flight deck at relatively low speed, before accelerating and climbing. Such maneuvers are part of the process of learning how to launch and recover aircraft. But this week?s development was much more advanced, involving the actual landing of an aircraft on the flight deck, with the use of arresting wires and a tailhook on the aircraft. This suggests a higher level of proficiency than had earlier been expected. Similarly, the videos of an aircraft taking off from the Liaoning display significant proficiency on the part of the Chinese pilot.
  • The operation involved a high performance aircraft. The Chinese test belies much of the media speculation from as recently as this past September that China does not even possess carrier-capable high performance aircraft. It would have been easier, and safer, for the Chinese to have used a slower, lighter aircraft, such as a trainer, to mark its first public aircraft launch and recovery. Instead, Beijing demonstrated that it is much farther along in practicing shipborne takeoffs and landings and is not limited to practicing on land.
  • The operation involved a domestically produced aircraft. The type of aircraft employed, too, was no accident. Part of the reason for the widespread skepticism about when China can put the Liaoning into operation rests on the assumption that the military does not possess any carrier-capable aircraft, since there have been no announced sales to China. This demonstration, however, employed a domestically produced aircraft, the J-15, albeit one clearly derived from Sukhoi. The decision to use a new, indigenously produced aircraft for this first public display suggests an underlying political message: Don?t underestimate what China can do when it sets its mind to it.

None of this should be taken to mean that the People?s Liberation Army will be conducting full-blown carrier operations in the South or East China Seas next year. It remains to be seen what other aircraft designs the Chinese have developed, including for airborne early warning and anti-submarine warfare.

But given the blithe, near-sneering dismissal of the Chinese carrier as recently as three months ago, it should remind us of the observations of Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Dominance Vice Admiral David Dorsett:

I think one of the things that is probably true, true from my observation in the last several years, is we have been pretty consistent in underestimating the delivery and IOC [initial operating capability] of Chinese technology, weapon systems. They?ve entered operational capability quicker.

Costco to spend $3 billion on special dividend

4 hrs.

Costco will spend $3 billion to pay a special dividend of $7 per share next month ahead of higher tax rates that may kick in come January.?

Many companies are making special end-of-year dividend payments or moving up their quarterly payouts because investors will have to pay higher taxes on dividend income starting in 2013, unless Congress and President Barack Obama reach a compromise on taxes and government spending.?

The Issaquah, Wash., company said Wednesday that the special dividend will be payable Dec. 18 to shareholders of record Dec. 10. In addition, Costco Wholesale Corp. will pay its regular quarterly dividend of 27.5 cents per share on Nov. 30 to shareholders of record as of Nov. 16.?

Costco also said Wednesday that its November revenue climbed nearly 9 percent to $8.15 billion. Revenue from stores open at least a year rose 6 percent. That increase would have totaled 5 percent excluding gains from gasoline price inflation and stronger foreign currencies. Sales were strongest in Texas, the Midwest and the southeastern U.S., as well as Canada and Mexico, the company said on a conference call. Customers snapped up candy, cooler and deli items and Costco said hardware, health and beauty and women's apparel categories also performed well.?

The company is selling $3.5 billion in debt to cover the cost of the special dividend. Costco will sell $1.2 billion in senior notes due in December 2015, $1.1 billion in notes due in December 2017, and $1.2 billion due in December 2019.?

Several Costco warehouses were closed during part of the month due to power outages following Superstorm Sandy. The company estimated that the storm trimmed 0.5 percent from sales of stores open at least a year. That is a key gauge of a retailer's health because it excludes results from stores recently opened or closed.?

Costco's shares rose $6.07, or 6.3 percent, to close at $102.58 on Wednesday. The stock has climbed from a low of $78.81 in early January to a 52-week peak of $104.43 last month.?

Investors have paid a maximum 15 percent tax rate on dividends since 2003. But that historically low rate is set to expire in January. Dividends will be taxed as ordinary income in 2013, the same as wages, so rates will go up depending on which income bracket a taxpayer is in. For the highest earners, the dividend rate could jump to 43.4 percent. Even if a political compromise is reached, there's no guarantee that the tax rate for dividends will remain at its current level.?

Fitch Ratings said Wednesday that it lowered Costco's issuer default rating one notch to "A+" from "AA-" because of the debt the company is taking on. Analyst Philip M. Zahn said "A+" is still considered an above-average, investment-grade rating.?

Costco runs 618 warehouses in several countries, including 447 in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.?

'RG3' Wants to Play Obama, Not Talk Politics

The Berlin Wall had already fallen by the time Robert Griffin III was born.

Today, the son of two Army sergeants has grown into one of the most-hyped young football stars on the national scene. He roared through Baylor University in Texas with a political science degree in less than four years, winning the 2011 Heisman Trophy along the way.

Griffin then moved to Washington, but not for the same reasons as other poli-sci grads who flock to the shores of the Potomac. Chosen by the Washington Redskins in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft, the 22-year-old star quarterback is the new great hope of the D.C. sports world.

Despite living in the nation's political capital, Griffin -- commonly referred to by the nickname "RG3" -- knows better than to talk much about his own political views. But he has a passion for encouraging young people to vote.

Griffin joined the nonprofit group Rock the Vote in October to encourage young people to cast a ballot. Griffin sent his own ballot to Texas by mail, but won't say whether he chose Mitt Romney or President Obama.

He also teamed up with the makers of the new video game "Assassins Creed III."

Griffin got an early taste for Washington last year when he met Obama and challenged him to a pick-up basketball game. "He said he wouldn't play me but I could play on his team," Griffin told Yahoo News.

Griffin has ambitions to go to law school, and he's leaving open the possibility of one day being bitten by the politics bug. "Who knows what the future will hold," he said when asked whether he could see himself in elected office. "But, right now, I have no plans for running for office."

For now, in a city polarized and clouded by partisan bickering, Griffin is one of the few figures who have shown promise of uniting the place. In an exclusive interview with Yahoo News, Griffin talked about the importance of voting rights, what it's like playing for the football team in the nation's political capital, his dream basketball pick-up game with Obama and his love of video games.

Yahoo News: When you cast your ballot for president, what were some of the most pressing issues that were on your mind?

RG3: For me, I always told my fianc?e and my family that money would never change the way I viewed politics. For me, it wasn't a money issue. It was about overall what each candidate presented, but I can't disclose who I voted for.

YN: Why don't you like to talk about who you voted for?

RG3: There's a couple things you don't talk about in life, and that's race, religion and politics. I try to make sure I don't talk about politics at all.

YN: You now live near Washington, D.C., the country's political city. Are you able to find time to follow politics much now that you're playing for the D.C. town?

RG3: I get my share here and there via the news on TV and sometimes I'll stop in on the stations and listen for a second. But for the most part, I try to stay out of it and make sure I stay focused on football.

YN: You were a political science major at Baylor. Is the political process different from how you imagined it now that you live in the politics capitol?

RG3: No, politics is not what people think it is. I know that from being a political science major. You really can't get too much of a feel for it by being this close to the capital unless you go out to rallies and you're an inside source. And by no means am I an inside source.

YN: Any politicians in D.C. you would like to meet?

RG3: I've met the [D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray] and I've met President Obama. Other than that, it's good for now. We'll see what politicians I can meet in the off season.

YN: What did you and President Obama talk about when you met him?

RG3: I met him at the National Prayer Breakfast after I won the Heisman. He just talked about how good of a player I was and I challenged him to game of basketball. He said he wouldn't play me but I could play on his team.

YN: Do you think Obama will ever change his mind and play against you?

RG3: I don't think he'll ever play against me. We'll have it me and him versus [All-American Baylor senior] Brittney Griner and Mrs. Obama.

YN: When you were younger, you had an interest in pursuing a law degree. Do you have any interest in running for office yourself someday?

RG3: I do want to go to law school, but right now, the 22-year-old me has no interest in politics. Who knows what the future will hold but right now I have no plans for running for office.

YN: Tell me about your efforts getting people out to vote. Why is it so important to you that people vote?

RG3: To me, it's not necessarily about whom you vote for, it's more about the fact that you go out and exercise that right. There's a lot of people who fight for our right to vote and people in other countries fighting for other peoples' right to vote and I think everyone should exercise that vote. Everyone says, "My vote doesn't count" but if everybody has that attitude then nobody would vote. Every vote does count and if you want something done, you have to reach out and be sure you're active about it.

YN: Have you learned anything about Washington, D.C., that you might not have known before you came here?

RG3: The actual town is smaller than people think. I haven't had that much of a chance to do that much in D.C., seeing that we're based in Northern Virginia and our stadium's in Maryland. But I've been able to go out on the tours and eat dinner in D.C. and it's awesome. The little experiences I've had there have been great. It's crazy how many tourists you see. People think the traffic in D.C. is all from people who live there, but it's all the tourists who are going to see the monuments. It's a really attractive place, not only for people who live around this area but for people from around the world.

YN: You grew up in a Christian home and went to a Baptist university. Have you found a home church in the D.C. area?

RG3: I go to a church in this area, but I haven't necessarily found a home church yet. I'm still in the process of finding that.

YN: Where do you attend?

RG3: I go to Cornerstone [Fellowship Church.]

YN: Has your faith shaped the way you view politics or policy?

RG3: It shapes everybody's view. To me, you don't directly relate it, but my faith makes me who I am. When it comes to that, my beliefs are not strict to only what the Bible says. I'm influenced by. ... You probably can't point out exactly what it shapes, but it does shape you.

YN: You have said that you want to try and unite the city. President Obama said he was impressed that you could bring people together in ways politicians can't. What's it like being the only person in this town who can unite Republicans and Democrats?

RG3: It's more than just me. It's this team. Whenever you play a sport, you can be extremely powerful in certain situations and when it comes to uniting people, football teams tend to do that. ... As long as we can continue to go out and inspire people, maybe D.C. will be better off.

YN: You came from a military family. Have you had the chance to interact with service members in D.C. since you've lived here?

RG3: I have had the chance to interact. Wounded Warriors, they bring them out to our practices and our games all the time and we get a chance to speak with them. Just the other day, we had a squad come out to one of our practices. It's just good to be able to show them the gratitude we have for them. My parents both served and my dad went over to the war. It's people like that who helped my dad come back. I lived in a military town so I understand that there's a lot of families who don't have their families come back. You want to show the appreciation they have for them, those who come back and the ones who have fallen because they're all ones who are helping keep this country upright.

YN: How do you feel about the winding down the military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan?

RG3: Everybody wants world peace, and there's no telling if it will ever happen. But the one thing we can do is try to make sure that it's facilitated quicker without force. It's not me, I don't run the country.

YN: Have you thought of joining the military?

RG3: Not at this time. You never know what could happen, but at this time it hasn't crossed my mind.

YN: Let's switch to football for a minute. Can you talk a bit about the transition from being a college player to joining the NFL? Is it any different?

RG3: The game is different because everybody on the field is an All-American. The game is faster, the hashes are closer so the hits look more devastating. In that instance, it has changed but it's still football. As a competitor you rise to the challenge. You can still have fun, just make sure you don't change your mindset towards it. There's far more that goes into being a professional athlete than being a college athlete. So many differences that people don't realize. It's not just about playing football and getting paid to do it. There's a lot of things that you have to deal with.

YN: Have those things surprised you?

RG3: Not necessarily surprised me but it's different when what you dream of as a kid and you think, "I want to be a professional athlete." You don't necessarily say, "I want to deal with all these other things as well."

YN: What are those things?

RG3: It's not something to complain about, but just the major difference between college and the pros is that in college you're guaranteed four to five years so long as you don't do anything criminally and in the pros you're guaranteed one day because you can be cut the next. The fact that you see guys' dreams taken away from them; some guys get chances some guys don't. Some guys are on the team and the next day they're cut because they needed a wide receiver because one of the other receivers got hurt and they cut the [defensive back]. It's tough to have to deal with all those emotional highs and lows.

When it comes to contract and money disputes, all those things are far more complicated than people think. Off the field things with media interviews and fines and things like that. It's such a business that people don't realize it from the outside in, but when you're in the inside looking out you kind of see the freedom you had as a college player is basically gone when you're professional.

YN: You have mentioned a love of video games. You did a joint promotion with "Assassins Creed III" and Rock the Vote. Have you found time to make your way through the game yet?

RG3: "Assassins Creed III" is an awesome game. I've had the chance to play it and I'm about 45 percent the way through. I only can play here and there. I can't play nonstop for a long time. It's a fun game and I've played it before. ... It won't change the way you view history but it's certainly a twist on it and it's very interesting the way they go about explaining the story and the historical events. It's really cool.

US budget impasse hurts markets

LONDON (AP) ? Lack of progress in negotiations for a deal to avoid a U.S. budget crisis before a January deadline sent world stock markets lower on Wednesday.

President Barack Obama and U.S. lawmakers have until Jan. 1 to reach a deal to trim the country's unwieldy deficit. Otherwise, a series of automatic tax increases and sharp spending cuts will take effect that could drag the world's No. 1 economy into recession.

A high-ranking member of the U.S. Senate unnerved investors and sent Wall Street lower on Tuesday after expressing frustration over the budget impasse and the looming "fiscal cliff."

In early European trading, Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.3 percent to 5,785.40 while Germany's DAX lost 0.2 percent to 7,320.92. France's CAC-40 fell 0.3 percent to 3,491.36.

Wall Street headed for a lower open, with Dow Jones industrial futures falling 0.1 percent to 12,845 and S&P 500 futures down 0.2 percent at 1,395.30.

Stock market losses began earlier in Asia. Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 1.2 percent to close at 9,308.35, a day after closing at a seven-month high.

Obama plans to make a public case this week for his strategy as he pressures opposing lawmakers to allow tax increases on the wealthy while extending tax cuts for families earning $250,000 or less.

On Wall Street, reports released Tuesday showing increases in U.S. consumer confidence and orders for machinery and equipment failed to boost stocks significantly.

"If one could just take politicians and the fiscal cliff out of the picture, an optimistic outlook would be far easier to cobble together. There's been depressingly little news of cliff breakthroughs, or even developments, of late," said analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore in an email commentary.

In Europe, sentiment improved this week after Greece's bailout creditors agreed to pay its next installment of loans and outlined a series of measures to lower its debt load over the coming decade. Concerns remain, however, over the country's economy, which is expected to enter a sixth year of recession in 2013 and the government's ability to implement its reforms.

Elsewhere, South Korea's Kospi shed 0.7 percent to 1,912.78 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.2 percent to 4,447.30. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.6 percent to 21,708.98.

Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.9 percent to 1,973.52, a four-year low. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index tumbled 1.9 percent to 750.97.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was down 38 cents to $86.80 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 56 cents to finish at $87.18 per barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2909 from $1.2939 on Tuesday in New York. The dollar fell to 81.86 yen from 82.17 yen.

Guidelines for Creating an Email Marketing List - Internet Network ...

Be Kind And Share :)

Sometimes money is a powerful incentive.

Email is a very affordable and easy strategy for marketing your business online. Email marketing can be used to share information about special coupons and offers, new services and products, or upcoming events. You could also use it to send thank-you notes to your customers.

The following are some tips which will help you run an effective email marketing campaign.

1. Request for permission

Merely having someone?s email address does not give you the right to send them promotional materials such as newsletters. Make sure you ask for permission first either through a personal email invitation or by phone. This will help you keep your promotional efforts CAN-SPAM compliant, as well as free from complaints.

2. Offer incentives

Offering incentives encourages people to join your mailing list. You could consider offering incentives such as free white papers, contest entries or coupon offers.

3. Seize every opportunity to create awareness

The first step towards creating awareness is having a signup form clearly displayed on your site. You should also identify and take advantage of every other opportunity available to invite people to sign up for your mailing list. This includes email signatures, invoices, brochures, receipts, business cards and flyers.

4. Offer various communication options

People have different preferences when it comes to the frequency and detail of email. To ensure as many signups as possible, make sure you offer several options that people can choose from.

5. Set clear expectations

When people sign up for your mailing list, they should to know about what to expect from you in terms of the frequency and content of emails. You therefore need to set clear expectations and stick to them.

6. Start small and build patiently

When getting started, don?t ask people to submit too much information. In most cases, a name and email address is enough. Later on, you can offer your members the option of updating their subscription preferences. Asking for excess information at the onset will only put off people and curtail your registration efforts.

7. Build your own list

Don?t be tempted to buy a list from anyone. In many cases, such lists are filled with errors as well as email addresses which are out of date. Instead of purchasing lists of questionable origin, take time to build your own credible list.

8. Use specialized email marketing solutions

Many people try to carry out email marketing using standard software programs such as Google Mail or Yahoo Mail. However, in most cases, they end up frustrated due to the limited capacity of such programs. To appear professional, you need to use specialized email marketing solutions. Such solutions will help monitor your emails and notify you whenever someone opens or forwards a message. This way, you are able to determine which of your messages were most effective.

The Secret Lives of Supercutters

Jess (Zooey Deschanel) is laid off from her teaching job in The New Girl. Jess (Zooey Deschanel) is laid off from her teaching job in The New Girl.

Since the beginning of time, humans have reshaped the creative works we encounter. Oral tradition invited storytellers to embellish existing narratives. Sheet music was powerless to prevent the parlor pianist?s reinterpretation. In the '70s and '80s, turntable jockeys led a sampling explosion. And today, of course, we have the ?supercut.?

As YouTube crawlers well know, the supercut strings together rapid-fire, out-of-context movie or TV scenes to create a sort of video essay. Many supercuts provide hard evidence of the existence of tropes long suspected but never quite proved: imperiled characters fretting that they have no cellphone signal; high-tech investigators asking their imaging software to "enhance"; action movie toughs girding for battle by announcing, "We've got company." But what motivates the supercutter to slog through hours of footage to compile these minute observations? And what distinguishes the masters of the form?

The supercut has its proud forebears. Think of Bruce Conner's 1958 found-footage collage, A Movie. Or What's Up, Tiger Lily?, Woody Allen's 1966 reimagining, overdubbing tour de force. And then there?s artist Christian Marclay, who may be the godfather of the supercut. Marclay's 1995 "Telephones" edited together seven minutes of existing movie footage featuring people talking on telephones. Color, black and white, dramas, comedies, Hollywood stars from every era. In its day, "Telephones" was no doubt mesmerizing. Marclay played with dynamics like pacing and visual juxtaposition. And there was the novel thrill of seeing personalities like Humphrey Bogart, Sean Connery, and Meg Ryan all joined on an infinite, imaginary phone call.

These days, "Telephones" seems rather quaint. It moves slowly and has no obvious aim. In the years since, Marclay's turf has been invaded by casual marauders armed with Final Cut Pro (editing software introduced in the late 1990s) and YouTube accounts (allowing for rapid propagation). Back in 2008, for example, Chris Zabriskie was working as a videographer for the local library system in Orlando, Fla. His co-workers all loved Lost, but the show left him cold. Around his office, Zabriskie kept threatening to demonstrate how often Lost characters say the word "what" as an excuse for other characters to recap expository points. Finally, a colleague handed him the DVD set and dared him to execute. It took him four hours (plus the time required to convert the DVDs into an editable format). He searched Lost dialogue transcripts that fans had posted to the Web in order to locate every "what" instance, then quickly slapped them together. "I put it up on YouTube on a Friday, just for my pals to see. When I checked on Monday, it had somehow leaked out and gotten 50,000 views. It got picked up by newspapers, Entertainment Weekly, G4 TV. Within a few weeks it was over 700,000 views," Zabriskie said.

Similar backstories accompany more recent supercut hits. Earlier this year, a guy named Dan (he didn't want me to use his last name), a Brooklyn-based copy editor for a print publication, learned Final Cut in his spare time and then spent two weekends putting together a supercut showing every time Don Draper says "what" on Mad Men. To his amazement, it garnered more than 900,000 views. This fall, Bryan Menegus, a recent college grad and another self-taught video editor, made a compilation of every single drink ever drunk on Mad Men. It took him two weeks to rewatch the whole series and then three days to edit his supercut together. He sold it for $150 to slacktory.com. Beyond that modest payday, neither of these guys has derived any material benefit from authoring a viral sensation. No lucrative job offers and?because their source material is copyrighted?no advertising windfall.

To better understand what motivates supercutters like these, I asked Slate video producer Chris Wade to help me create a supercut of my own. I wanted a project that was bounded and wouldn't eat up more than a couple of days. So I began by limiting my material to Season 1 of the Fox sitcom New Girl. It's a show I like and, more important, this meant I'd only need to deal with a total of about 8.5 hours of video (23 episodes that last 22 minutes each). I decided my supercut would edit together every single frame in which the character Jess' cellphone case?a pink dealie with giant bunny ears?appears onscreen. The bunny case is openly referred to only once in the entire season. (When Jess first wields it, a friend asks ?What is that?? and Jess replies ?My phone.?) But it seemed it was introduced as a shorthand way to instantly brand Jess as a hypergirly quirkster. The repetition and lack of deeper resonance I felt a bunny phone supercut might deliver seemed basically on par with the supercuts mentioned above, which made me feel I?d be undertaking a project of similar scope and aim. Plus, because looking for the bunny phone frames was a strictly visual hunt and the pink phone was easy to spot, I'd be able to fast-forward through episodes instead of painstakingly listening for specific dialogue.

Winning Solo Ezine Ad Campaigns | Start Your Own Business ...

It is smart marketing to have a diverse advertising portfolio, and that is exactly why you need to seriously look at ezine advertising. For so many years a certain percentage of marketers have known the value of traffic that can be had with this. This method uses a principle that is prevalent in other methods, leveraging, but it still does it in a unique way. Any time you run advertising, you must ensure you know what you are doing. So obviously your ads will have a better conversion rate if you attend to that fact. Aside from writing winning ads, you should know a few things about the process of using this particular vehicle which is the solo ezine ad campaign. We are willing to bet that if you took a poll asking how many web marketers run real optimization tests, the percentage would be shockingly low. That is most crucial when trying new techniques much like what you are reading today about visit this site. Well, one thing that is good news is if you have just arrived to internet marketing you can learn more about testing and have a leg up on many competitors.

It is all too easy to have a sense of excitement early on and want to get things going, but that can cause you to overlook small but important details. Therefore what you should consider is carefully rolling-out anything new you want to try. How ever you wish to design your tests, and in what manner of delivery is entirely your call.

The same with new tactics for your website or blog, perhaps try it on some of your pages but not all of them. No discussion about testing would be complete without mentioning how critical tracking is so you can have metrics to analyze.

Unfortunately we always have to remind people to make sure their ads evade the spam filter. It?s really easy to get blocked by the strong spam filters out there. If your ad has all the wrong words in it, then that will most likely be disastrous for your campaign; you will not be happy. If your ezine ad allows you to create a subject line, then the same consideration applies to that, as well. You should also scan through the body of your email to check if it?s fine. Avoiding problems is in the best interest of your company; not only that but you do want to make it. There are tons of place on the web that will check it for free.

The purpose of any ad in an email is to make a conversion, which is not a sale, it is the simple act of clicking the link in that email. Then your destination will need to take over from that point on, but it is your ad that also must logically flow into it. Giving people a reason to take some kind of action on the landing page is obviously a concern, as well.

When it comes to proper ad format, you will need to follow the direction of the ezine. All you need to do is follow the instructions given to you by the ezine, and that will work out just fine. Your ad will probably be sent in HTML format, so you will need to make sure it is coded right. Remember, too, that you are trusting the ezine owner when it comes to the quality of the list, etc. If you need help with actually writing a solid ad, then we recommend you learn copywriting principles. Getting the right kind of traffic is one of the biggest challenges for any online business. The advantage of ezine solo ads is that it?s possible to get high converting traffic in a short time. A well written ad in the best possible ezine is always a winning combination. Once you get these basics right, there?s absolutely no looking back. Compared to other forms of advertising, ezine ads can be very economical and profitable. What?s holding you back? Make plans to begin your next ezine solo ad campaign.

IOC chief backs plan for 4-year doping bans

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge of Belgium listens to a question during a news conference at the start of a conference to promote Olympic values with the youth, in Amsterdam, Monday Nov. 26, 2012. (AP Photo/Peter Dejong)

(AP) ? IOC President Jacques Rogge supports proposals to double the length of doping bans to four years as a way of keeping drug cheats out of the Olympics.

The World Anti-Doping Agency is planning to raise the penalty from two to four years for serious drug violations in the next version of the global anti-doping code, which comes up for approval next year and goes into effect in 2015.

"We are waiting for the final text but already what is on the table today is something that is heartening for us," Rogge said Monday at conference in Amsterdam.

Rogge said the proposal "is something that satisfies us in that it endorses increasing sanctioning for what I would call heavy doping."

He said the change would be in line with the International Olympic Committee's previous failed attempt to bar any athlete slapped with a ban of more than six months from competing in the subsequent Olympics.

The so-called "Osaka Rule" was thrown out last year by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on grounds that the sanction represented a second penalty for the same offense and did not comply with the WADA code.

WADA's proposed four-year bans should serve the same purpose as the IOC rule.

"This is something that is completely in line with the Osaka Rule, because the Osaka Rule was to stop the athletes to participate in the next games if their penalty was higher than six months," Rogge said. "Now with this high penalty of four years, automatically you don't participate in the next games."

Rogge also said the IOC is still studying the case against Lance Armstrong to see if it can strip the American cyclist of the bronze medal he won in the time trial at the 2000 Sydney Games.

Armstrong has already been stripped of his seven Tour de France titles for involvement in what the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency called the biggest doping conspiracy in sports.

The IOC must consider its eight-year statute of limitations before deciding whether to take away Armstrong's Olympic medal.

"There is still legal work to be done," Rogge said.

Bodybuilding Workouts and How to Gain Weght Naturally

The Benefits of Natural Bodybuilding

Bodybuilding has quickly become a favorite past time, though it has changed considerably since the old days. There was a time when bodybuilding was open only to those who had considerable amounts of time. There were no supplements, and if you wanted to get into shape, you had to spend most of your time at the gym. If you weren't someone who could get ripped the normal way (lifting weights), then you were simply out of luck. Today, bodybuilding is a bit different, though you do not have to go the supplement route in order to gain the perfect body.

Muscle Maximizer is a great program that goes hand in hand with bodybuilding workouts. It will not provide you with supplements, but it will provide you with nutritional plans designed to work with your body. One of the biggest problems that bodybuilders deal with today is a variety of nutritional 'plans' that claim to have the answer, but in fact tend to cater to what many believe to be the standard body and metabolism. If you are different, then you need something tailored to your needs. If you are similar to everyone else, then a tailored plan can get you even closer to your goal with bodybuilding workouts.

Workout Tips

Make sure you eat before and after your workout.
If you cannot go outside to exercise or make it to the gym, have an alternative, such as a home Gym set up.
Don't exercise excessively -- know your limits!

It is important to remember that there are many benefits to bodybuilding in addition to the obvious. For one, it can help to reduce stress, which is often something that everyone deals with. Stress can cause negative thinking along with an exertion of mental energy. When you exercise, you will find that endorphins are released, which will help to change the way you think. Though exercise might be hard work, it has plenty of benefits for you!

Another benefit of course is the reduction in anxiety. Something that many people tend to forget is the fact that anxiety and stress are two very different things. Stress and anxiety can both effect your mental state, but in anxiety you will experience feelings of nervousness, fear, worry, and a number of other conditions. Exercise helps the body in more ways than one, but without the right diet and exercise routine, it will all be for nothing.

The meal plans you receive from Muscle Maximizer will obviously depend on the information you supply, though there is one slight disadvantage. Meal plans will be provided on a regular basis, and you will need to have internet access if you are to view the new meal plans as they are introduced.

When you sign up, you will of course be presented with two introductory plans, though it is assumed that you will become tired of the plans rather quickly. Eating properly, and enjoying the meal plan in question will go a long way towards ensuring you have the body you've always wanted.

The world of bodybuilding and bodybuilding workouts has changed, but that certainly doesn't mean you need to take advantage of the many supplements on the market. As a matter of fact, you can still use the old school training methods to build your body, which is without a doubt the best way. You won't have to worry about spending extra money on supplements, and you won't have to worry about one of those supplements causing more harm than good.

The case for getting rid of cable

Cable and internet are two monthly bills that most of us see as untouchable. But you can get by without either.?

By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / November 25, 2012

In this 2009 file photo, a Time Warner Cable truck is parked in New York. Hamm argues that cable television is far from a necessary expense ? and in certain cases, you can get by without Internet, too.

Mark Lenhihan/AP/File

I?ve talked over the last few days about the value of reviewing monthly bills and subscription services. Today, I?m going to look at two bills that people often think of as ?untouchable,? but which essentially just boil down to expensive entertainment.

Skip to next paragraph Trent Hamm

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

I?m looking at you, cable/satellite bill. I?m looking at you, too, internet bill.

Let?s look at each of these bills separately.

First,?a cable/satellite bill is purely for entertainment.?There?s essentially no information that you can get from your cable box that you couldn?t get elsewhere, and honestly, the vast majority of what it?s used for is entertainment.

The question is whether or not you could get equivalent entertainment (or information) from other sources. Is there anything you?re getting from your cable box that you couldn?t really get from your DVD player, a roof antenna, and a converter box ? and no longer have a monthly bill?

With just local television, you can get the necessary news and weather alerts and a wide diversity of programming (especially since, with the advent of digital television, you can get ten to twenty channels almost everywhere). With a DVD player, you have access to lots and lots of movies, especially in conjunction with a Redbox kiosk.

What about the internet bill? I?ll agree that?many people use the internet for work-related purposes, but it?s also used largely as a source of entertainment in the home.?Web browsing, movie watching, gaming ? they?re all forms of entertainment enabled by internet access.

Again, can you find these entertainments elsewhere? Would a digital converter box and an antenna on the roof suffice for television programming? Could you use other resources, such as a library, for your other internet needs?

For many people, these two bills add up to well over $100 per month. In some cases, the bill can touch $200 or $300 a month. That?s a pretty big impact on a person?s monthly finances.

It?s well worth considering an alternative plan, at least in the short term, so that you can get control of your finances again. Eliminate the internet or the cable box (or both) from your home for a while and breathe a sigh of relief at the reduced monthly bills.

For many people today, I?d suggest choosing the internet over the cable box if you?re choosing between the two. There is a lot of entertainment that can be found online ? often enough to replace the regular programming given to you by cable or satellite services.

Looking for another way to cut back on monthly entertainment bills? Consider cutting back on your mobile data plan. How often do you really use it for useful things that aren?t purely for entertainment?

The goal isn?t to live a spartan lifestyle. The goal is to stop paying for stuff you don?t use ? or things that you can already get through another service ? and put that money to better use in your life.

This post is part of a yearlong series called ?365 Ways to Live Cheap (Revisited),? in which I?m revisiting the entries from my book ?365 Ways to Live Cheap,? which is available?at Amazon?and at bookstores everywhere.?

Dinosaur 'Birds' Glided Rather Than Flew Like Modern Birds, Fossil Analysis Suggests

By: Live Science Staff
Published: 11/23/2012 10:10 AM EST on LiveScience

Some of the first birdlike creatures to emerge during the age of the dinosaurs probably couldn't get their heavy wings to take them off the ground, and they likely opted for gliding over flying, new research shows.

Modern flying birds have a single primary layer of easily separated long feathers covered with short ones ? a design that helps them overcome drag when taking flight. A new analysis of the fossils of two of their ancestors shows that the arrangement of feathers for primitive birds was quite different.

The birdlike dinosaurs Anchiornis huxley and Archaeopteryx lithographica had dense overlapping layers of wing feathers that were likely difficult to separate, the researchers found. Instead of lifting off from the ground, these creatures probably climbed trees and used their wings to glide from a height, the scientists said.

What's more, differences in the wing feathers of Archaeopteryx and Anchiornis appear to represent early evolutionary experiments in wing design, according to the researchers. For example, Archaeopteryx had multiple layers of long feathers, while Anchiornis had an abundance of simple feathers that overlapped like a penguin's, said study researcher Nicholas R. Longrich, a postdoctoral fellow at Yale.

Longrich's colleague Jakob Vinther, a former Yale doctoral student, now with the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, said the fossil analyses add to an intricate picture of how feathers and modern birds evolved.

"We now seem to see that feathers evolved initially for insulation," Vinther explained in a statement. "More complex vaned or pinnate feathers evolved for display. These display feathers turned out to be excellent membranes that could have been utilized for aerial locomotion, which only very late in bird evolution became what we consider flapping flight."

The research was detailed today (Nov. 21) online in the journal Current Biology.

Video: Reporting At the Top of the World | Reporter and - Boise Weekly

How do you get at ?ground truth? in the Arctic when it is melting right beneath your feet?

Over the summer I set out on a journey with documentary journalist and filmmaker Caitlin McNally to do our best to get at a story that is as vast as the frozen tundra of the Arctic itself. We arrived in the Arctic just as scientists were recording a historic melting of the sea ice due to global warming, a perilous development for the environment that has become a potential boon to the oil industry as shipping lanes and drilling operations open up amid the great melt.

To document the story, we traveled over the Bering Sea by plane and landed in remote islands and coastal villages where we met with everyone from whaling captains to oil industry executives.

With her own Canon 5D and a small crew accompanying her for part of the trip, McNally was constantly looking for the best way to bring the story home visually. We both ended up agreeing it is simply too big of a tale to try to tell in just one trip. We will have to go back.

As the ice begins to set in again and the shipping lanes return to their locked, frozen state, we find ourselves waiting for the spring thaw and hoping for a chance to return to the Arctic. The place, the people and the story are gripping and they draw you in. In this GroundTruth video, McNally shares ?the story behind the story? of our continuing GlobalPost Special Report ?The Melting Arctic: An Oil Rush at the Top of the World.?

McNally, who has worked on numerous documentaries with PBS FRONTLINE, is working with GlobalPost to continue covering the titanic struggle for power and influence that has pushed its way to the surface in the Arctic. This battle at the top of the world is unleashing peril for a delicate environment and the way of life for the indigenous people who live here, but it is also unlocking opportunity for exploration of vast untapped mineral resources. Hundreds of billions of dollars are at stake. Observers of the Arctic are hopeful that a real debate might get underway next month in the US congress on the Law of the Sea Treaty and that ratification will finally happen.

We will be closely watching this and other big developments. The Arctic is a vast, complex narrative unfolding as quietly as melting ice and it requires great storytellers like McNally to get at it. We look forward to working together in the future and we will keep you posted on our future travels to the High North.
