Microsoft Shutting Windows Mobile Apps Store

By: Ian Mansfield |

?Microsoft has announced that it is closing its mobile apps market place that had supported downloads for the older Windows Mobile 6.x based smartphones.

The downloads service will close on the 9th May the company confirmed in notices being sent to customers.

The last update to the Windows Mobile OS was back in January 2010 - since then the company has focused its efforts on the Windows Phone operating system.

Apps and services already installed in the smartphones will continue to work, but further purchases direct from Microsoft will not be possible.

Also, all phone data, including applications acquired through the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace service, data and user-specific settings, will be lost in the event that a phone is wiped or "hard reset" and will not be recoverable from the apps store.

Windows Mobile applications and games that are compatible with Windows Mobile 6.x may still be available directly from their developers or via third-party marketplaces.
